This is a strange post to be writing for a few reasons. Not only is this the first post in God knows how long **cough** (8 months) **cough**, but it is also coming to you after a couple of months of being in lockdown.
Now the major plus is that I have amassed a large knowledge of plants, soil, and preferential light conditions due to having nothing but time to research my indoor plants. I have also got a balcony, which is really starting to come alive at the moment, so it is exciting times over here.
On the other hand, however, I have basically not been to the garden, which this blog is currently about the whole of 2020. Unfortunately because of the current pandemic, looking at these pictures from 2017 upsets me a bit, because I know thanks to photos from my mum that the 2020 version quite frankly looks like s#!t. So my love for the garden is currently on lockdown ...get it? *wink*
So I am toying with the idea of, obviously still writing about this garden, but also adding some up to date posts in regards to my balcony garden in Watford. I know that over the next few years the progress on the garden is much slower, so there will inevitably be less to write about.
Just thought I would give you a real life update before I catch you up with the journey in this blog. Let's get to it then...
The year is 2017, Brexit is becoming a very real possibility and I am pretty damn proud of my garden progress. The garden looks the best it ever has and I am continuing the next phase of hard landscaping. Not only that, but the garden is beginning to develop its own character. It has a life without me that I am unable to control, primarily because of time, but I also want it to grow naturally on its own terms.
There was an old metal tiered shelving unit that we no longer needed in our hallway, so instead of throwing it out I decided to upcycle it in the flowerbed and turn it into a makeshift obelisk/ trellis/ shelving unit ...I basically don't know exactly what it will be yet, but soon I will (hopefully)! Luckily I managed to visit the garden in time to catch my Oriental Lilies in bloom before slugs did what they do best and destroyed my dreams ...queue the tiny violins.
I also began to remove more soil from the designated bbq area with the hopes that once I knew what I was doing with the space the foundations would be ready for next year's gardening season.
Despite the current difficulties we are all going through, I really advise getting out in the garden if you have one, or just start growing some plants/ veg indoors. It is a great distraction from the anxiety we can sometimes feel and it has really helped me get me through the lows. I have almost certainly overdone it with my indoor and balcony plants this year due to my garden withdrawal symptoms (just bought a banana plant), but growing something is a sign of hope for the future, so get started now, but keep ya love lockdown.
