Gravel Pit

That's right, an early noughties Wu-Tang reference ...deal with it! (What a great song by the way).

Unfortunately there is no Ol' Dirty Bastard here, just a slightly younger, less bastardy dude trying to build a rockery in his garden. Exciting times I know - I really wanted to get the ball rolling on this main garden feature, but still had no rocks!

Building a rockery with no rocks did seem like making apple pie without apples, but the next best thing is gravel ...right?? I actually can't stop thinking about apple pie now, but I digress... I went and bought about 10 bags of pea shingle from B&Q and came back thinking 'Yes, now I can cover the whole area' easy peasy ...wrong.

[Gardening Tip] Here is a little tip that I have learnt about gravel, mulch and aggregates: Order what you think you need, double it and then add a few more. Literally bigger is better!

In hindsight I should have ordered a tonne bag straight off the bat, but I believe money at the time was an issue. I also put down very thick layers of newspaper, which has been effective, but is susceptible to ripping, so a couple of layers of a weed membrane would have been preferable.

I also bought a couple Elijah Blue grasses to stick in-between my Red Star plants. They remind me of blue hedgehogs, except these hairy little critters weren't created by Sega in the early 90's.

Reverting my attention back to the shed I decided to paint the window seal the same colour as the the shed door and the walls a magnolia/ egg shell colour, to lighten the space. This made an immediate difference to the garden, similar to what happened when I painted the fence. Never underestimate what impact a lick of paint can make to your garden or home. I knew I still had some refining to do, particularly around the window and door area, but things were most certainly looking up.

The gravel pit was progressing nicely apart from the teeny weenie issue of having a rockery ...with no rocks. Rocks are overrated anyway!!

....mmm pie
